Day 2: Overturn Stroke

(Left) Overturn Practice Sheet (Credit Becca C. Rafter) @ The Happily Every Crafter (Right) My finished practice sheet for the Overturn Stroke.

The Overturn Stroke humbled me and got my attention because I struggled with this one. Going up with the upstroke (light stroke) and around the curve to connect to the heavy) downstroke, it fell apart for me. I tried not to but I would always stop right at the top. There was no smooth transition as you can see in my practice sheets.

I re-watched the Overturn stroke video four times, tracing and practicing along with Becca in the video instructions. By the last row my tracing hand was shaking. You’re supposed to go slow and I went fast just to get it over with. I was so frustrated. I’m still struggling with my grip of holding the brush pen. I had to self sooth and remembered not to be too hard on myself. This is my second day practicing calligraphy. It’s okay to give myself a break. I decided to practice twice a day for 30-minute increments.

Michael Jordan didn’t become Michael Jordon overnight. Billy Jean King (the tennis star), she didn’t get to her level of athleticism overnight. They both practiced and took their craft seriously, which I am too.
